Cilacap Quake Claims at Least One Life: President’s Staff

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit several areas in Java Monday morning caused at least one death.

Tris Yuni Istiadi, 49, died of heart attack during the journey back from the evacuation location.

According a statement by Andi Arief from the President’s special staff on natural disasters, the earthquake that occurred at 03.06 a.m some 293 kilometers southwest of Cilacap, West Java, had been felt in several areas.

In Cilacap, Central Java, Ciamis, Tasikmalaya and Garut, West Java, the quake was felt for around ten seconds.

Some residents in Cilacap and Tasikmalaya panicked and escaped to higher ground in fear of a tsunami.

In Cianjur and Sukabumi, West Java, the earthquake was felt for around five to 10 seconds. It was also reportedly felt in Jakarta.

“The Regional Disaster Management Body (BPBD) has conducted a check on the earthquake reference map in Cilacap regency after receiving information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reaching the conclusion that the epicenter of the quake outside the sector [was safe] for the Cilacap regency beach area,” the statement said. 

Two more earthquakes of weaker magnitudes occurred Monday at 1.38 p.m and 2.41 p.m., Antara.com reported.
